Dun Zhi Huang Dance Theater

Beginning with the most famous Dunhuang Grottoes’ Pipa Feitian as an iconic figure, our concept takes its inspiration from the dynamic flows of her fabric pieces to create a fluid and continuous ribbon that links and distributes all the different programs of our project. By abstracting and re-interpreting the movement of her ribbons, we shape the contours and connect the architectural elements of the program. The drape of her ribbons is duplicated to form a “cloud” at the Feitian’s feet in order to emphasize the floating or flying effect of the dancer; this cloud shapes the theater.

The second drape on the top, wrapping the Pipa, is a metaphor of the sound waves undulating from the instrument forming the hotel program. The third and final set of ribbons imitates the movement of her arm playing the instrument composing the canopy of the sports facility. The whole figure and image of the dancing Feitian aims to accentuate the dynamism of her movement, creating a new and strong unity for the architectural project.
