The Ark of Art carries contemporary culture from present to future…
a visionary continuity
Located in the South Harbor of Helsinki, the project takes advantage of the city’s context. By revealing the relations between the sea and the city, the history and the present, the art and the technology, the museum finds its symbolic aspect within the harmonized dialogues of all, under a unique and outstanding shape of a wooden ark giving its landmark status.
The organic wooden envelope facing the sea contrasting with the dynamic urban copper facade, show the dialogue of two expressive sides that interact with its environment. The Sea and the City set a cultural background that Helsinki has always had, as “Form must have a content, and that content must be linked with nature” and the Ark of Art gives a continuity to it, as “Architecture belongs to culture, not to civilization”, quoting Alvar Aalto.
